Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies
Short-drama apps stopped being a niche curiosity some time ago. Sensor Tower recorded about $700M in global in-app revenue for the category in Q1 2025, and the US generated 49% of it. The quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M by Q1 2026, while the full year of 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Search a store for a short reels app and you will run into at least one of the five names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, the apps look identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Beneath the surface, however, they differ on ownership, pricing, short reels app platforms and extras, and the differences affect what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Master Comparison Table
This grid puts the full field on one screen before the rounds begin. Prices mirror the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Install counts come from each app’s Google Play listing. When a cell says « not reported », no reliable source made public the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. Read the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are
The incumbent is ReelShort, and it continues to carry the most weight. MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China; launched in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group. Its 2025 revenue stands at $785M in MPA’s estimate, and MPA forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Launched in April 2023 and holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. In Q1 2025, Sensor Tower put ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M, but by Q1 2026 the two were even at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as « dreamwave », is the youngest app here, yet it already has about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. With 5M+ Android installs, My Drama is the minnow, yet it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. For context, GoodShort, which sits just outside this lineup, holds about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on the strength of market share.
Round 2: What It Costs
In this round, the apps look more alike than anywhere else. A weekly pass at around $19.99 is sold by ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave in the US App Store, and each one auto-renews. Beyond that, ShortMax lists a $9.99 « Weekly Pass Pro », and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. DramaBox takes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Since four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the wiser buy for steady viewers. Prices vary by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may be different. Round winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin.
Round 3: Free Ways to Watch
Free viewing is the area where the marketing gets loud and the details get thin. Per ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad opens up two premium episodes. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. The easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying is via ReelShort’s official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins show up only in third-party guides. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and « unlimited coins » generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so avoid them. Winner: ReelShort, clearly.
Round 4: Screens and Platforms
Screens are where these apps truly diverge. Beyond iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. Since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax offers web browsing too. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app. The trump card belongs to My Drama, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort overall, although My Drama takes the living room.
Round 5: Catalog and Originals
No rival touches ShortMax on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave says it has 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and according to reports, more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. ReelShort owns the best-known hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. The most interesting pipeline belongs to My Drama, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, purely on volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print
In this round, DramaWave runs away with it. No other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing, and its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video. ReelShort’s cross-device sync ranks as the next most useful perk for viewers who move between phone and laptop. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given « unless the paid product/service is unusable », and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Whichever app you use, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead, since deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Round winner: DramaWave.
The Final Picks: Best For
Since no single short drama app sweeps every round, the right choice comes down to how you watch. Thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices, ReelShort is best for web viewing. On Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. For sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that overshadow everything else in the grid. Pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan, DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers. Ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader. ReelShort is again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if all five tempt you.
